Stove Down? Here's What Happens Next
Stove, cooktop, and range repair in Toronto by Number One Appliance Repair Toronto — radiant, induction, and gas, from builder-grade slide-ins to pro-style rangetops.
What should I do right now?
If you saw sparks or smelled burning plastic, cut the breaker and stop using the stove — that's arcing, and it doesn't heal. If you smell gas: shut the valve, open a window, and call immediately. A burner stuck blazing hot on "Low" is a fused switch — keep that circuit off until it's replaced.
What does stove repair cost?
A flat $149.95 diagnostic anywhere in the GTA: full teardown, multimeter testing of elements, switches, and boards, and a firm written quote — Diagnostic + OEM Parts + Labour = total. Proceed with the repair and the diagnostic fee is credited 100% toward it.
How fast can it be fixed?
Most cooktop repairs finish first visit — radiant elements, infinite switches, igniters, and terminal hardware ride on the van. Same-day and next-day windows run 365 days a year, and dinner-hour emergencies are exactly what the 6:30am–11:30pm phone line is for.
Inside the Diagnosis: How We Bring a Cooktop Back
Symptom → what's usually behind it
Element won't heat at all
A blistered radiant ribbon under the glass, a failed infinite switch behind the knob, or a burnt terminal connector. We lift the maintop, ohm-test the coils, and verify 240V output from the switch.
Blazing hot instantly, won't simmer
The infinite switch's contacts have welded shut, feeding the element constant 240V — a real fire hazard. The switch block is replaced and the dial range verified from simmer to full.
Induction flashing, ignoring pots
First the honest check: the pan must be flat and strongly magnetic. With proper cookware, we run board-level diagnostics on the generator modules — a shorted power transistor means the inverter module is replaced as an assembly.
Sparks or popping behind the stove
Arcing at the terminal block where the wall cord lands. Breaker off, then we rebuild the junction: burnt wire cut back to clean copper, new ring terminals, high-temperature ceramic connectors, every lug torqued and load-tested.
F10 / F30 on the display
The board believes the oven side is overheating. We measure the RTD sensor probe — about 1080 Ω at room temperature is healthy. A drifted probe is replaced; a truthful probe convicts the control board.
Touchpad dead or glitching
Steam from pots corrodes the keypad's ribbon traces behind the glass. We clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner; a keypad still shorting gets a new membrane panel.
Gas work is licence work
Igniter ports, spark modules, and gas valve solenoids are serviced under Anthony's TSSA gas licence — Ontario regulates who may touch a gas valve because an incorrectly seated one is a house-fire risk, not a callback. That covers everything from a builder-grade range that clicks without lighting to Wolf's DSI spark modules and Thermador's star burners with their XLO simmer modules.
The glass-top policy, stated plainly
A cracked ceramic cooktop cannot be patched, glued, or "monitored" — boil-overs reach the live 240V elements beneath the crack. We order the exact OEM maintop frame for your model, transfer the burner boxes onto the new glass, and test insulation resistance before it cooks again. If the maintop costs more than the stove justifies, we'll say so at the diagnosis.
Repair or replace, the stove version
Stoves and cooktops run 13–15 years and sit among the most repairable appliances made: elements, switches, igniters, sensors, and even boards are all economical fixes for most of that life. The parts language you'll hear on site: radiant ribbon elements, infinite switches, the limiter that runs the hot-surface light, the RTD probe, the electronic oven control board, spark modules, and induction inverters.

Stove & Cooktop Repair FAQs
How much does it cost to diagnose a stove in Toronto?
A flat $149.95 anywhere in the GTA — the trip, a full electrical (or gas) teardown with multimeter testing, and a firm written quote. Proceed with the repair and the diagnostic fee is credited 100% toward it.
My gas burner keeps clicking but won't light. What's wrong?
Usually moisture or grease in the spark igniter ports, a weakened igniter, or a failing gas valve solenoid. We clean the ports and burner caps first; if the clicking continues, the spark module or valve is replaced — gas work done under Anthony's TSSA licence.
Do you repair induction and high-end gas cooktops?
Yes — induction inverter boards and generator modules on Bosch, Electrolux, Thermador, and Miele, and gas rangetops including Wolf's spark modules and Thermador's star burners. Board-level diagnostics come before any module is condemned.
My glass cooktop cracked. Can it be patched?
No — and don't keep cooking on it. Liquids can reach the live 240V elements beneath the crack. The glass can't be glued or patched; we order the exact OEM maintop for your model, transfer the burner boxes onto it, and verify insulation before it goes back into service.
I saw sparks behind my stove. What should I do?
Cut the breaker now and don't use the stove — arcing at the terminal block where the wall cord lands melts its way to a fire. We rebuild the power junction with new ring terminals and high-temperature ceramic connectors, and load-test every connection. These calls get priority routing.
